Infeed grinding - precision for complex contours

Infeed grinding is a high-precision, centerless grinding process for machining complex workpiece geometries. The grinding wheel is fed radially - directly into the workpiece. This process is ideal for machining shoulders, recesses and profiles where axial movement is not possible or not desired.

Frequently asked questions on the subject: infeed grinding

What is the difference between through-feed loops and plunge-cut loops?

Throughfeed grinding and plunge-cut grinding are both grinding processes, but they differ in the way the workpiece is processed. In throughfeed grinding, the workpiece is fed continuously through the grinding machine, making it particularly suitable for long, cylindrical parts. In plunge-cut grinding, on the other hand, the workpiece remains in a fixed position and the grinding wheel moves radially towards the workpiece. Throughfeed grinding is more efficient for large quantities and long workpieces, while plunge-cut grinding is used for shorter workpieces.

How does infeed grinding work in the production of turned parts?

In infeed grinding, the workpiece is positioned stationary between rotating grinding wheels while the grinding wheel(s) move axially towards the workpiece. The material is removed at a specific point in order to precisely machine complex contours or shoulders. Unlike throughfeed grinding, the workpiece does not move continuously, but remains in place during the grinding process.

Why is infeed grinding used in precision manufacturing?

Infeed grinding is particularly valued in precision manufacturing when it comes to machining complex geometries and shoulders. It enables targeted material removal at defined points and impresses with its high dimensional accuracy and surface quality. The process is ideal for workpieces with interrupted or non-cylindrical contours. Infeed grinding offers high process reliability and repeat accuracy, particularly for smaller series or parts with special profiles.

Which materials can be processed using infeed grinding?

Infeed grinding can be used on a wide range of materials, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum and carbides. The process is particularly suitable for workpieces with complex contours or interrupted surfaces. Hardened materials and special alloys can also be precisely machined. The choice of the right grinding wheel, which must be matched to both the material and the desired geometry, is crucial for optimum results.

How do abrasives and coolants affect the quality of infeed grinding?

Abrasives and coolants also play a key role in infeed grinding. The right abrasive ensures precise shaping and even material removal, especially with complex contours or interrupted surfaces. Coolants are crucial for reducing thermal loads, which can be particularly high during spot machining. They not only improve the surface quality, but also extend the service life of the grinding wheels. The selection of suitable abrasives and coolants must always be tailored to the material and the specific requirements of the workpiece.

Quality at every stage of production

We guarantee our customers first-class products and absolute precision. Customer requirements guide our actions and our decisions. We do a lot to achieve this:

  • in-process inspections by qualified employees
  • Use of highly developed measuring technology, e.g. 3D measuring machines, contour measuring devices, profile scanners, form measuring machines
  • 100% inspection of high-volume parts for freedom from chips and important dimensions such as length, inner and outer diameter

Our ISO certification ensures the consistently high standard of our quality management. We work in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016. We have been certified in accordance with the environmental standard DIN EN ISO 14001 and the energy standard DIN EN ISO 50001 since 2018.
