Feed-through loops for small and large series

Through-feed grinding is an important process in the production of turned parts. At SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG, we offer you high-quality solutions that are specially tailored to your customer specifications. But what exactly is through-feed grinding?

Through-feed grinding is a process in which workpieces are passed through a grinding machine. The surfaces of the turned parts are processed in order to achieve a precise shape and smooth surface. This process is particularly suitable for long, cylindrical parts that require a high degree of accuracy.

Frequently asked questions on the subject: Feed-through loops

What is the difference between through-feed loops and plunge-cut loops?

Throughfeed grinding and plunge-cut grinding are both grinding processes, but they differ in the way the workpiece is processed. In throughfeed grinding, the workpiece is fed continuously through the grinding machine, making it particularly suitable for long, cylindrical parts. In plunge-cut grinding, on the other hand, the workpiece remains in a fixed position and the grinding wheel moves radially towards the workpiece. Throughfeed grinding is more efficient for large quantities and long workpieces, while plunge-cut grinding is used for shorter workpieces.

How does through-feed grinding work in the production of turned parts?

In throughfeed sanding, the workpiece is fed through two sanding discs, which process it evenly. These grinding wheels rotate at high speed and grind the material to ensure a smooth surface and precise dimensions. The workpiece is continuously transported through the machine, which makes processing particularly efficient. This process is ideal for the mass production of cylindrical turned parts, as it guarantees consistent quality at high volumes.

Why is throughfeed grinding used in precision manufacturing?

Throughfeed grinding is particularly popular in precision manufacturing because it enables high accuracy and surface quality. It is ideal for processing workpieces with tight tolerances. The even material removal ensures that the workpieces have a homogeneous surface. The process is also particularly efficient for large quantities, as it enables fast and uniform machining.

Which materials can be processed using throughfeed grinding?

Through-feed grinding can be used on a wide range of materials, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum and carbides. The process is particularly suitable for materials with high strength and wear resistance. Special alloys and hardened materials can also be processed without any problems. However, it is important to adapt the grinding wheels to the material in order to achieve optimum results.

How do abrasives and coolants affect the quality of throughfeed grinding?

Abrasives and coolants play a crucial role in throughfeed sanding. The right abrasive ensures effective and even material removal without damaging the workpiece. Coolants, in turn, prevent the workpiece and grinding wheel from overheating, which improves the surface quality and extends the service life of the tools. The choice of the right abrasive and coolant depends on the material to be processed and the desired surface requirements.

Certifications & quality standards

Quality at every stage of production

We guarantee our customers first-class products and absolute precision. Customer requirements guide our actions and our decisions. We do a lot to achieve this:

  • in-process inspections by qualified employees
  • Use of highly developed measuring technology, e.g. 3D measuring machines, contour measuring devices, profile scanners, form measuring machines
  • 100% inspection of high-volume parts for freedom from chips and important dimensions such as length, inner and outer diameter

Our ISO certification ensures the consistently high standard of our quality management. We work in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016. We have been certified in accordance with the environmental standard DIN EN ISO 14001 and the energy standard DIN EN ISO 50001 since 2018.
