Sliding headstock turning is a manufacturing process in which workpieces with a long, cylindrical shape are machined on a sliding headstock turning machine. The workpiece is guided by the machine along the Z-axis while the tool works along the X-axis. This method enables the production of high-precision, thin-walled and complex-shaped parts in series production.
Which materials are best suited for long turning?
Swiss-type turning is particularly suitable for materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum and certain plastics. These materials can be machined efficiently on sliding headstock automatic lathes as they offer good machinability and the required precision is guaranteed. Materials such as titanium or hardened steels can also be machined, but require special machines and tools.
What are the advantages of Swiss-type turning compared to other turning processes?
The main advantage of sliding headstock turning is the high precision in the production of long, cylindrical parts.
