CNC turning for processing blanks

The machining of blanks by CNC turning is an essential process in modern production technology. Using computer-aided lathes, the raw material is precisely shaped into the desired form. A variety of cutting tools are used to remove the material layer by layer in order to achieve complex geometries and fine tolerances.

CNC turning not only enables high accuracy, but also high repeatability and efficiency, making it a preferred method for manufacturing components in a wide range of industries.
Further information
Production in turret turning
In turret turning, the workpiece is machined on a lathe with several tool stations, which enables the cutting tools to be changed quickly and efficiently.

This technology is particularly suitable for the precise machining of series products and complex components in industries such as mechanical engineering, automotive and medical technology.

Frequently asked questions on the topic: CNC turning

What is CNC turning and what is it used for?

CNC turning is a computer-controlled manufacturing process for machining cylindrical components. The workpiece is clamped in a lathe and precisely machined using rotating movements. It is primarily used for the production of precision parts in the automotive, mechanical engineering and electronics industries. The process enables high repeat accuracy and the machining of complex geometries. It is ideal for series production as well as individual production. Materials such as metal, plastic and even wood can be precisely machined using CNC turning.

What advantages does CNC turning offer over conventional turning processes?

CNC turning offers numerous advantages, including greater precision and repeatability, as the process is computer-controlled. It enables the production of complex geometries that are difficult to achieve using conventional methods. CNC turning can also produce larger quantities faster and more efficiently. Thanks to automation, the risk of errors is reduced, resulting in fewer rejects. Another advantage is the flexibility in material processing, as both soft and hard materials can be processed. This makes CNC turning suitable for a wide range of industries and applications.

What materials can be processed with CNC turning?

CNC turning can be used to machine a wide range of materials, including metals such as steel, aluminum, brass and copper. Plastics such as polycarbonate and POM can also be precisely shaped. In special applications, even wood and composite materials can be processed. The process offers the flexibility to process both soft materials and particularly hard metals. Specific tools are available for each material to ensure optimum machining. As a result, CNC turning is widely used in various branches of industry.

How exactly does a CNC lathe work?

A CNC lathe works with an accuracy that is often in the range of a few micrometers. The machine is equipped with a computer that controls the movements of the tool and ensures that the specifications are adhered to exactly. Every movement, whether turning or cutting, is precisely programmed, which ensures consistent quality in series production. The use of CAD/CAM software makes it possible to produce complex geometries exactly according to drawings. This high level of accuracy makes CNC turning ideal for precision applications in areas such as aviation or medical technology.

How long does the production of CNC turned parts take?

The production time of CNC turned parts depends on several factors, such as the complexity of the part, the size of the series and the material used. For simple parts, machining times can be relatively short, while complex geometries require more time. In addition, the number of parts to be manufactured influences the total production time. However, a high level of automation and modern CNC machines enable very efficient production, which significantly reduces production time compared to manual processes. In many cases, smaller series can be completed within a few days.
