What is precision milling?

Precision milling is a high-precision machining process that is often used for the exact machining of metal and plastic. At SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG und Co KG, we use state-of-the-art CNC milling machines with up to five axes to produce even complex geometries with minimal tolerances in the micrometer range. Our machines work with a repeat accuracy of a few thousandths of a millimeter and enable us to process the finest structures.

In precision milling, specially selected milling tools rotate over the workpiece at high speed, with the cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth being precisely matched to the material and requirements. Machining takes place in several steps, from rough machining to ultra-fine machining, in order to achieve optimum surface quality and maximum dimensional accuracy.

Our precision milling processes include automated measuring systems that carry out in-process inspections during machining. Dimensional accuracy is continuously monitored using tactile and optical measuring methods. This guarantees perfect accuracy of fit and consistent quality. Which materials are suitable for precision milling?

Precision milling enables us to machine a wide range of materials with the highest standards of dimensional accuracy and surface quality. SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG und Co KG processes both metals and plastics using state-of-the-art CNC technology to produce precise components for demanding applications.

Metals such as aluminum (e.g. EN AW-5083, EN AW-7075), stainless steel (e.g. 1.4301, 1.4404), titanium (e.g. Ti6Al4V) and tool steels (e.g. 1.2379, 1.3343) are ideal for precision milling. These materials offer high strength, thermal stability and good machinability. Specially alloyed steels ensure long tool life and enable fine machining structures with minimal tolerances.

High-performance plastics such as POM, PEEK, PTFE or PA6 GF30 are also precisely milled by us. These materials offer low coefficients of friction, high chemical resistance and dimensional stability. These materials are particularly ideal for applications in medical technology, aviation or electronics production.

Our CNC milling machines adapt the cutting speed, feed rate and tool selection precisely to the material. Regardless of the material hardness or material composition, this results in components with smooth surfaces, sharp edges and maximum dimensional accuracy.

What is the advantage of precision milling?

Precision milling is characterized by maximum dimensional accuracy and fine surfaces. We manufacture precise components with minimal tolerances that are superior to other machining processes. The use of modern milling machines means that even complex shapes can be realized precisely.

Compared to conventional milling, precision milling enables significantly higher repeat accuracy. Even the finest structures can be produced with consistent quality. In contrast to turning, this process is particularly suitable for workpieces with multiple axes and complex contours.

Grinding removes material through abrasion, while precision milling uses targeted cuts to ensure exact edges and smooth surfaces. Although laser cutting or water jet cutting offer high precision, they are less suitable for deep or three-dimensional machining.

Which machines are used for precision milling?

Precision milling requires state-of-the-art machines that deliver exact results. For this reason, we rely on high-precision CNC milling machines that produce even the most demanding components with minimal tolerances. Our machines work with multiple axes to efficiently create complex geometries from the raw material.

This includes three to five-axis milling machines that enable various processing steps in a single pass. High-speed milling ensures particularly fine surfaces and high dimensional accuracy. Thanks to low-vibration machine designs, we achieve perfect cutting results, even with difficult-to-machine materials.

Our milling machines are equipped with automatic tool changers and digital measuring systems. As a result, components are continuously checked during machining. In this way, we ensure that every milled part is produced exactly to your specifications. What surface quality can precision milling achieve?

Precision milling enables exact surface processing with minimal roughness values. By using high-precision CNC-controlled multi-axis milling machines, we achieve a surface quality of up to Ra 0.1 µm, depending on the material, tool selection and machining strategy.

The surface quality in precision milling is largely determined by the cutting speed, feed rate, cutting depth and tool coating. By using ultra-fine-grained carbide tools and PCD milling tools with optimized cutting edge geometries, we achieve the finest structures without burr formation. High-speed milling at speeds of over 40,000 rpm reduces cutting forces and minimizes surface roughness.

For further improvement, we use a dry micro-lubrication process or minimum quantity lubrication to avoid thermal influence on the surface. In addition, in-process measurement is carried out using tactile and optical measuring technology to ensure that every milled surface meets the highest standards of dimensional accuracy and flatness.

This precise control of all parameters makes our precision milling ideal for components used in the aerospace, medical technology and semiconductor industries. Our precision milled parts have the finest surfaces with the tightest tolerances.
