Frequently asked questions on the subject: Precision shafts

What are precision shafts and what are they used for?

Precision shafts are mechanical components that are used in various machines and systems. They are used to transmit rotary movements or forces and must be manufactured with extreme precision. They are primarily used in areas where high demands are placed on accuracy and resilience, such as in mechanical engineering or the automotive industry. Precision shafts are also often used in medical technology, robotics or electrical engineering. They can be made from different materials such as steel, stainless steel or aluminum, depending on the respective application. Precision shafts are characterized by low tolerances and high dimensional accuracy, which makes them indispensable for critical applications.

What materials are used for precision shafts?

Materials with high strength and corrosion resistance are often used for precision shafts. Steel is the most commonly used material, as it offers high stability and is easy to machine. Stainless steel is often used for precision shafts that are used in corrosive environments or in medical technology. Aluminum is also a popular choice, especially when low weight is important. Titanium or other alloys can also be used in special applications. The choice of material depends heavily on the application and is tailored to the specific requirements.

How is precision ensured in the manufacture of shafts?

Precision in the production of shafts is achieved through the use of modern CNC technologies. These machines make it possible to work with very low tolerances and to precisely implement even complex geometries. During the production process, the shafts are measured several times to ensure that they meet the required dimensions. Quality controls such as optical measurements and tolerance checks are an essential part of the process. In addition, attention is paid to high quality when selecting the raw material in order to avoid deformations or inaccuracies. The manufacturers' many years of experience also play an important role in ensuring accuracy.

What tolerances are possible for precision shafts?

The tolerances for precision shafts depend on the respective application and the customer's requirements. As a rule, the tolerances are in the micrometer range to ensure maximum precision. Common tolerance classes are IT6 or IT7, although smaller tolerances are possible for particularly critical applications. Depending on the manufacturing process and material, the tolerances can be customized. Precision shafts are often manufactured specifically for use in high-precision machines where tight tolerances are required. The use of modern measuring techniques ensures that the shafts remain within the required tolerances.

How can precision shafts be customized?

Precision shafts can be adapted to the customer's specific requirements in almost every respect. This includes the choice of material, the length and diameter of the shaft as well as special surface treatments. Other customizations include the addition of threads, grooves or keyways for specific applications. Special heat treatments to increase strength or surface treatments to improve corrosion resistance are also possible. Depending on the application, special tolerances or geometric shapes can also be taken into account. This flexibility makes it possible to offer customized solutions for different industries and applications.
